Return to Work- Options for Processing Bank Cards Safely

August 13, 2020

As we begin planning for the return to work, we wanted to remind merchants of a few options available for processing bank cards safely.

Accept tap/contactless transactions -  All POS devices on campus have the ability to accept tap transactions.  Most locations should already have the contactless/tap function enabled on your POS terminals.  If you do not and would like this functionality, send me your merchant account number and device ID and I will arrange to have it enabled.  OR, you can speak with Moneris technical support to have it enabled (1 866 319 7450), upon your return.

Here is a link to a COVID update from Moneris regarding the increase in contactless transactions (https://www.moneris.com/en/COVIDUpdate/Contactless-Limit-Update).  The tap limit is set by the card brands and is usually $100.  The card brands have increased that limit to $250/transaction due to COVID.

Adding an optional External PINpad to your existing Moneris terminal – Most staff on campus are required to enter the amount of the transaction into their POS device (terminal) and then hand the same device to the customer.  This set up requires both the merchant and customer to handle the same device.  Moneris offers an external PINpad that can be connected to the Moneris terminal, that allows the customer to use the external PINpad to input transaction information when prompted or uses the contactless option if prompted.  The amount owing is entered by the merchant on the Moneris terminal and the customer uses the external PINpad to tap or insert the card and enter a pin number.  If you are interested in the external PINpad, an order will need to be placed with Moneris for this Combo Unit, the merchant account would need to be configured, the PINpad installed properly and your original unit would need to be returned to Moneris.  Securing the new PINpad would also need to be considered (as this is a PCI requirement).  There are additional rental fees for each PINpad.  This option is relatively easy to implement.
